Mammoth Wheels

I turned around to take a glance,
At the bygone history in all its expanse;
Trying to envision, a moment, a phase,
Of no pain, no fear , no cries in the human race;
Like a wind, tearing at all that  it gets to see,
They all roared back lashing at me;
Riots,Wars and Subjugation,Genocides,Violence and Slavery;
Acts  of terror in the name of reign or bravery;
Not a single moment could I find
Of absolute calm in the realms of mankind;
Arrogance, Fanaticism, Greed, Trick and Treason.
Each and every page bellowed its own reason;
Patches aplenty cover the visage of earth
Dark and morbid, or light and in mirth
The hues keep moving, they don't remain the same
The mammoth wheels of time playing their jigsaw game
The grass that is red and sometimes yellow
One day becomes  green, the sun providing the glow
Is this the cycle of of life , Of existence?
A question beyond the reaches of my cognizance!
For now, I close my eyes in obeisance and utter a silent prayer;
For peace  to prevail forever and forever!

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is located at China Town in Singapore. A must visit place for those visiting the first time.

  1. Beautiful poem! All of us do ask so many unanswerable questions when we read some horrifying news and end up with praying!
    We all join your prayer "For peace to prevail forever and forever!"
    Best wishes!

  2. Wonderfully written Jaish! May be prayer is the only thing we can do to end "Riots,Wars and Subjugation,Genocides,Violence and Slavery;
    Acts of terror in the name of reign or bravery;"

    1. Thanks TF. I dont do it often as I am not that aware of the technicalities like sonnet, haiku etc....(got these from other posts on Indi)... I just write in a style that comes to mind...Not sure if this is acceptable to the experts in this genre! :)

  14. Hi Jayashree

    Your vision of Peace on Earth? I guess we need to find that inner space that is calm and devoid of hatred.

    Reminded me of Lennon's "Imagine".

  21. Though I have visited Singapore many times, I haven't been there. I have beent o Ladakh to the monasteries like Hemis, Thiksey, Stok etc. One can find peace in these surroundings as well as in the mountains. Ofcourse, till the time we don't mend our ways, it is not easy to find peace anywhere.

  27. This poem is indeed a Beautiful contemplation indeed on the wheel that was invented without ‘Intellectual Property Rights’ in the remote past.

    … Is this the cycle of of life, Of existence?...

    Answer is all the strife is invented by the civilized societies just 5000 years ago, the gods they invented added to the misery of the lower strata of civil society, through their branded religions… for 5K years. Our faiths may not agree, yet the fact remains.
