Down the Drain!

I dont know about the rest of the world but I do have some Mr.Bean days when I end up doing really really stupid things.

I dont think I have that much brains like a rocket scientist but my absent-mindedness must be on par with the worst of their kind with respect to that.

Well, yesterday I was just about to empty the dustbin in the bath room. I would tie the garbage bag and dump it down a refuse chute(a common one for the entire floor). It would slide down a concealed inaccessible path to a huge garbage tank and join the garbage bags from the rest of the apartment which would number around 10 * 15 i.e. 150. Of course the number of times each house contributes in a day needs to be estimated as well.

Well, as I was emptying the dustbin I saw the unopened pack of toothpaste on the bathroom counter. It dawned on me that the toothpaste packet would need to be thrown as well after removing the tube from inside. Why not dispose it off now itself at one shot ? I thought. I proceeded to add the empty pack to the garbage bag before proceeding to throw it away forever. At least I thought so.

When we were about to retire for the night my husband asked 'Hey where is the tube? This pack is empty?' . I froze at the sight of what he held in his hand. The empty packet of the toothpaste. Yours truly seemed to have retained the pack and thrown the unopened tube of toothpaste in the garbage. My conscience immediately projected a cunning thought outward. 'You had brought a mega-size pack to save money hi hi'

I tried to recollect the exact moment when I threw that thing into the garbage bag but drew an absolute blank! Was I really that stupid? I kept thinking. Blank! Blank! Blank! What on earth was going on in my mind then? I wondered. Blank! Blank! Blank! again.

This brought earlier episode to my mind. A lot more costlier one!

It was the day after I returned from vacation. Like all first-week-after-vacation s, it was a very productive one where I felt rejuvenated and did my chores perfectly on time. The moment I got up, I emptied the garbage bins in the house and sent the bags down the chute.

A few hours later, we found the back cover of our cordless phone dumped somewhere by my little brat.
We thought he would have kept the phone in one of his usual hiding places. After hunting the house, we asked him. 'V do you know where the black phone is?'

'Yes Amma , in the dustbin'

'Which one?'

'The blue one'

'Bathroom or kitchen?'

'Kitchen!'

Oh Oh!! My little fellow had thought that piece of black plastic to be a waste.

All this while we at home and the teachers at school have been trying to educate him about cleanliness and the practice of binning litter and not strewing them around and little junior had strictly followed the rules! Unaware of that, I had happily tied up the bag and dumped it down the refuse chute.

So our cordless phone literally went down the drain that day! As did the Colgate toothpaste yesterday!

Coming back to the latter episode, all I could manage was a sheepish grin when my husband stared at me bewildered and totally dumbfounded by my act. 'Now I really doubt who threw that phone!' he added with a  sly smile ! :(  ha ha

Now, I have begun to say a silent prayer before dumping the garbage!

  11. Hi Jaish,

HAHA....What a situation you cooked up for yourself. :p
I guess, you just zoned out for a moment, caught up in the heat of the moment. It usually happens, when we're thinking of something else and performing some other activity.

Heck, now where did I keep that mouse, it was right next to the keyboard...oopsss..I hope you didn't take it Jaish :p :p :p

  15. Ha ha ! No bad..good competition to Mr Bean. Well, I have been Mr Bean on a couple of occasions too. The most recent one was.. when I went to Coimbatore station to catch my train to Bangalore and sat on the wrong platform facing the other side.. and my train came and went.. and I rushed at the last minute to find it happily chugging away. Only a La' SRK stunt could have saved me.. but I could hardly run with all my bags. Then had to call and launch into some detailed explanations about how I missed the train even after reaching the station on time. The next day, I booked my flight to go back as there were no trains.. and again the cab driver who had dropped me the previous day to the staion, dropped me again to the airport..me, my bags and all. Luckily for me, he maintained a studious silence :)

    1. Hear me about this, Ash! There was a time when I sat on the same platform right in front of the train and let it go - merely because the board outside had had the name of a different train at that platform when I entered the station and my train was expected to leave half-an-hour later from the same platform :)

    2. Hmmm! Do you have to compete with me on all thing? :)

    3. Oh Oh!! Both of you better get some training from Raaa One...Then defying gravity should be a piece of cake!! :)

    4. Ahh. Suresh..welcome to my boat or I will welcome myself to your boat :) I am not competing, you see I sat on the platform looking the other way whereas you sat on the same one.

Yes, Jaish, we both could use Raa-One training, but then why would we catch trains ? We would just fly down :)

  23. I have had hundreds of incidents like This in the past. The pen drives which went to the net center were conveniently forgotten after the print outs were taken in the nt center. Bus tickets that had change information remained in my hands much after the bus and happy conductor had left, and so on. And still, my head refuses to listen..boo..hoo..:(

    1. Oh Oh!! Pen drives!! :) You know in Singapore since most buses accept the prepaid cards, its very rare for people to use change,I mean real cash but if they do, the machine on the bus expects exact change...It just swallows what you put in and wont return any change! This teaches people to have change handy ha ha!

  24. Why don't I remember even one?? Blank!blank!blank!! But I remember something my friend's daughter has done. Friend was taking the garbage to throw it in the chute like you did..:-) while walking in the corridor somehow the trash cover hit the floor and she wondered what that tak tak sound was...she opened only to find Remote controls...but she already lost cordless phones by then:-)

  31. LOL. You remind me of the time when as roommates doing our final cleaning before move out; we ended up throwing our CO2 detector into the trash. One of us had removed and kept it on the table because the battery was low and it had kept beeping, but someone else had not known what it was and thrown it! Because we had to hand over keys to the realty and it was a fire hazard related thing, we had to go dumpster diving before we could leave!!!! Eeeek, will never forget that incident! BTW, come back to IFW soon, we miss you! It's been a long long long time since we saw you there!

  34. Jaish that reminds me of Newton. He wanted to record the exact time in which an egg came to full boil. So he went to the kitchen with an egg and a watch in hand. However, as you rightly said the absent minded clan of scientists that he belonged to what he did was just the opposite of what he intended to do - the watch in the boiling water and kept staring at the egg in hand.

Recently, I am unable to find my wrist watch. Now after reading your post I do wonder...

Enjoyed reading your blog...will come back for more...
